Who are we?

Sonar Theatre was founded in Galway city, Ireland in March 2016 before our inaugural performance, GHOSTS, in April of the same year. As of January 2017, the company is now based in Limerick city and developing new work due for presentation later in 2017.

Our name, Sonar Theatre, derives from our working processes and the performative moment. We believe anything can be a creative impulse for new work, and as such, in devising new work we incorporate the vision of each performer and elements which inspire them to create/perform. We then structure these impulses and desires to form a show. We listen and respond to the world around us, whether that be socially, politically or philosophically, and find the best means possible to present these cultural conversations in performance. Creating shows is a transaction – we take a multitude of influences and artistic forms, remix them and present work. It is a process of giving and receiving.

This giving and receiving then reflects performance itself. Performers and an audience are the two halves that combine to make the theatrical experience. An audience receives the energy and ideas of the performers, who in turn feed off the audience’s energy. This symbiotic relationship grounds us, forces us into the present, and in that space we create theatre together. We communicate with our energy in place of words.
